Is Saturday Night Live Flatlining?

Forever people have been arguing about which cast of SNL was the best and it seems the consensus is that whatever cast was on when you discovered the show, is the best cast. For me it was Phil Hartman, Dana Carvey, Kevin Nealon, Ellen Cleghorn and the gang. The sketches were amazing. Toonces the Driving Cat, Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer, Wayne's World, Massive Headwound Harry... The list goes on.

In last night's episode (01/27/18) alum Will Farrell hosted and I was hopeful. Sure there was an amazing George W. Bush cold open so things seemed off to a good start but the lazy writing that the show has been criticized for lately showed it's face. Commercial Shoot from last night's episode is a prime example of just how lazy the writing has become. As I watched it, it seemed so familiar that I went to YouTube and searched "old people commercial pot pie" below I posted both videos for you to compare.

Now it wouldn't be all that bad if the writers decided to do something different beyond making them say just absurdly stupid things. Because besides that, it is the exact same thing. From the clothes to the inexplicable truck grill on the wall, the exact same thing. The only difference is that the real video was able to make me genuinely laugh. Even more lazy is that the original video is over six years old... What's next, will we get a Pete Davidson finds a dead body in the woods sketch in 2024?
I hate to sound like an old man but the problem with SNL isn't that the audience is turning to YouTube, it's that the writers are.
