Beef Jerky. I LOVE the stuff. I will eat the stuff till my jaw hurts, then go back for more. It’s a bit of a problem.
If you are familiar with the Mecca of gas stations known as Buc-ee’s, then you know jerky is something they are known for. They have an entire deli counter full of the fresh stuff and rack and racks of portions vacuum sealed for purchase. I happened to be near the Buc-ee’s north of Ft. Worth, Texas and decided to stock up. I couldn’t decide what to get, so I put together a sampler. Since my budget was limited, I had to stop at 5 varieties.
Peppered Beef Jerky 2 Geeks
Extra dry, too much so. Strong black pepper flavor really complements a full smoky, beef flavor. Overall a little disappointed and peppered is my go-to flavor.
Bohemian Garlic Beef 4 Geeks
Very surprised at this one. Good chew. Upfront with sweetness and soy that finishes with a strong, but not overpowering garlic notes.
Peppered Dried Beef 5 Geeks
Great texture. Just the right amount of moisture. This is what the peppered jerky aspires to be. I will be back for more of this deliciousness.
Hill Country Hatch Green Chili 1 Geek
Very earthy, too much so. Overpowers the beef flavor. Little to no heat. A little sweet. Unpleasant aftertaste. I love Hatch Chilies and expected better from this one.
Dried Venison Sausage 3 Geeks
Good snap from the casing. Good mouth feel. Pronounced black peeper with a hint of garlic. No real venison flavor. Not as dry as I imagined it would be, but good.
This is just the tip of the iceberg as to what they have. It’s an amazing, snack food wonderland. If you find yourself on a road trip and see that giant beaver in the distance do yourself a favor and swing in. Just make sure and get some jerky.
